DIGBOI: Digboi College (Autonomous) in Tinsukia district is set to open Dr Ambedkar Study Centre here in the college premises to promote and disseminate the philosophy, research, and legacy of Dr BR Ambedkar, the father of Indian Constitution. This was informed by Dr Gopal Chandra Das, Founder of Anita Das Memorial Educational Centre (ADNEC), during a press briefing here on Saturday evening.

Dr Das, an ardent follower of Dr BR Ambedkar, has been actively contributing to various socio-educational causes in and around Digboi to commemorate the 135th birth anniversary of Ambedkar slated to be observed across the nation on April 14. According to Dr Das, based on his expression of interest through formal approach to the authority of Digboi College, the authority subsequently decided to open the much-needed learning centre here in Digboi.

“To initiate the initial process, an amount of Rs 25,000 out of assured 1 lakh financial assistance was handed over formally to the college authority,” informed Dr Das, adding that a grant of Rs 20,000 would also be extended annually by the trust.

Notably, Dr BR Ambedkar Study Centers are being established in colleges across India to promote and disseminate his philosophy, research, and legacy. These centers aim to engage students, faculty, and the community in understanding Dr Ambedkar’s contributions to various fields, including constitutionalism, social reform, and economics, and to explore their contemporary relevance.

Dr Das shared that Anita Das Memorial Educational Foundation, which he founded, has been undertaking various activities since March 17, to be concluded on April 14.

Effigies of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, the inaugural Law Minister of independent India, were distributed among various educational institutions across the districts including Dibrugarh, besides donation of books therein. Theme-based drawing and speech competitions were also organized at different educational institutions to mark the celebration of the birth anniversary of the great pioneering leader.

Also referred to as Equality Day, Ambedkar Jayanti honours Dr Ambedkar’s lifelong dedication to advocating for the rights of women, workers, and marginalized communities in India. He worked tirelessly to eliminate social discrimination and promote equal rights for all citizens under the law.

Dr Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow, located in present-day Madhya Pradesh. Belonging to a Dalit family, he experienced caste-based discrimination from a young age. Despite these challenges, he remained undeterred and chose education as his means to combat social injustice. As the first Law Minister of independent India, he was instrumental in framing the Constitution, embedding civil liberties and advocating for affirmative action to uplift marginalized communities.
