TEZPUR: The District Road Safety Committee meeting was held today under the chairmanship of District Commissioner Ankur Bharali in the Conference Hall of the District Commissioner’s office, Sonitpur, Tezpur. The meeting was also attended by Superintendent of Police, Sonitpur Barun Prakyashtha.
Welcoming all the stakeholders, DC Bharali reviewed the activities undertaken in the district in alignment with the observance of National Road Safety Month 2025, which was to be observed from 1st January to 31st January 2025. The District Transport Officer briefed the gathering on key initiatives implemented during the month, including awareness drives in schools and transport associations, as well as health and eye check-ups for drivers, helpers, and other stakeholders. He further informed that awareness programs and quiz competitions were conducted in five schools, while leaflet distribution and awareness campaigns were carried out in traffic hotspots, including rural areas. Additionally, public announcements were made through Fixed Loudspeaker Systems and mobile vans, along with the display of banners and posters.
The Inspector of Schools provided an update on the Road Safety Oath, administered every Saturday in all schools across the district, and the implementation of the Chhota Cop initiative. The meeting also discussed corrective measures by concerned departments regarding road and sidewalk repairs.
Examining comparative data on road accidents, the District Commissioner appreciated the efforts of all stakeholders. The data revealed that in January 2024, the district recorded 43 accidents, whereas January 2025 has seen a significant reduction, with only 19 accidents reported so far.
Reiterating his strict stance on road safety enforcement, DC Bharali directed the authorities to ensure compulsory helmet use and maintain strict vigilance. Discussions were also held on the installation of road signages at key traffic points, including highways, the Hit and Run Motor Accident Scheme, 2022, and other relevant topics.
As part of the meeting, District Commissioner Ankur Bharali ceremoniously handed over four breathalyzer kits, with two kits presented to Superintendent of Police Prakyashtha and two to DTO Amar Baruah.
Additionally, in observance of National Martyrs’ Day, all attendees, led by DC Bharali, observed two minutes of silence at 11 AM in honour of Mahatma Gandhi and the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s freedom. The meeting was attended by Co-District Commissioner of Naduar Raj Boruah, Additional District Commissioner Twahir Alam, and other concerned members of the District Road Safety Committee.
