Guwahati: Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the doctors of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) will take advice from top doctors of the AIIMS in New Delhi on how best to treat ailing Congressman Tarun Gogoi, who is said to be suffering from post-COVID sequelae.

Speaking to media persons outside the GMCH after taking stock of Tarun Gogoi's health, Sarma informed that the doctors of Guwahati will hold a video conference with the top doctors of AIIMS to ensure that Gogoi is getting proper treatment for his condition. "If we need to modify the treatment line, we will have to do that. Or if they tell us that we will have to take him to the AIIMS in Delhi, we will have to decide how we are going to make the arrangements."

"Up until now, Tarun Gogoi had been maintaining oxugen saturation levels of around 94 with very minimal oxygen support. But today, in the morning, his oxygen level plunged to 82, upon which he was brought to the ICU. After being administered arificial oxygen, his levels have jumped somewhat," said Sarma.

He further added that Gogoi's condition has improved drastically since the morning and he can now speak. "However, his oxygen level has been fluctuating, which is a cause for serious concern."

Sarma further added that many patients, after recovering from the COVID, have shown similar signs. "We have been discussing how the post-COVID period is even more frightening than the COVID. We have observed that the patients remain stable until they become negative. After testing negative, they become visibly healthy over the next couple of days. However, 3-4 days later, their health again begins to deteriorate," said Sarma.

Abhijit Sarma, the Superintendent of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), had earlier informed The Sentinel Digital that Gogoi is suffering due to post-COVID complications.

"Even though Tarun Gogoi had tested COVID negative, he had a bit of generalized weakness. His oxygen saturation level was maintained around 93-94%. A very minimal amount of oxygen was given to him yesterday. Earlier today, there was a sudden drop in his oxygen saturation level, because of which, we thought it best to shift him to the ICU for his proper monitoring," he said.

The 85-year-old Gogoi was rushed to the ICU of the GMCH in the early morning hours of Thursday after his condition turned "critical." Earlier, the octogenarian was admitted to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after testing positive for the dreaded coronavirus on August 26.

The Congress veteran was later discharged from the hospital after testing 'negative' for the respiratory disease.
