GOLAGHAT: Merapani Journalists’ Association, a leading journalist organization in Golaghat district, recently conferred the Doyang Valley Award to nature lover Ponaram Thengal with a day long programme.

It may be recalled that the Merapani Journalists’ Association has been conferring the ‘Doyang Valley Award’ since 2016 for contribution to the society in the various aspects of social, cultural, educational, nature, etc. in Merapani and Greater Doyang region.

Social Activist, Educationist Nirmal Bora, Senior Journalist, Working President of Golaghat Press Club Diganta Kumar Bhuiyan, General Secretary Prabin Kumar Das, Social Worker Pona Bora presented the award to Punaram Thengal.

The award consists of gamosa, seleng, memento, safoora, felicitation letter and cash money in memory of Hatem Ali. Aims and purposes of the programme were elaborated by Merapani Journalists’ Association General Secretary Hiranya Gogoi while Assistant Secretary Wahidur Rahaman gracefully addressed the ceremony.

At the beginning of the event, documentaries made by the journalists’ association regarding the life and work of nature lover Ponaram Thengal were shown to the public. Another documentary about the identity of the Merapani Journalists Association was also screened. It is to be noted that Ponaram Thengal, a nature lover of Merachuk village in Chawdang pathar, has sacrificed his ancestral property on about 16 bighas of land and kept the existence of the Daiyang forest alive, setting a rare example of love for nature.
