Assam: Drugs Worth Rs 20 Crore Seized In Karimganj

KARIMGANJ: Early on Wednesday, After authorities reported that a Manipur registered ambulance was found carrying drugs in Guwahati, police stopped another vehicle carrying drugs in the Karimganj area of the state. Reports claim that both the vehicles contained drugs worth 39 crores and three people were also detained in connection with the seizures.

The drug bust was made when police stopped the car which was travelling from Mizoram in Karimganj, Assam's Barak valley.

"@karimganjpolice intercepted a vehicle coming from a neighbouring state at Kontakcherra and seized 2.01 kg heroin packed in 131 soap cases and 50,000 yaba tablets. Also apprehended two accused in the operation," Tweet read by CM Sarma.

When reached, Padmanabh Baruah, the superintendent of police in Karimganj, told the press that the vehicle had come into the district from Mizoram and was headed for Tripura.

According to sources,  Tripura is 25 km far from Karimganj.

"The majority of drugs that are shipped to Tripura eventually make it to Bangladesh. According to market standards, the medications' total value would be approximately 25 crores, " he added.

Additionally, according to Joint Commissioner of Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta, an Assam police team stopped the Manipur-registered ambulance at the parking lot of an apartment in this area's Hengerabari after receiving a tip.

"We discovered 200 grammes of heroin and 50,000 yaba tablets after thoroughly searching the car. The medications would be worth around 14.1 crores "added he.

According to Mr Mahanta, this was the first instance of drug trafficking in an ambulance in Assam. The ambulance in question managed to get through several police checkpoints after entering the state from Manipur.

He claimed that a resident of Meghalaya had been detained for his purported involvement in drug smuggling.

"The shipment belonged to an international narcotics cartel and was intended to be delivered to Bangladesh via Meghalaya. In order to capture the additional network participants, we have stepped up our efforts "said Mahanta.
