HAILAKANDI: Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on Tuesday inaugurated a Model Residential School at Bandukmara in Hailakandi, constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK), at a cost of Rs. 30.42 crore.

The school is among the 21 Model Residential Schools being developed across Assam under the scheme, with 10 already completed. The initiative aims to enhance educational infrastructure and provide quality learning opportunities, particularly in minority-dominated and underdeveloped areas.

Minister Pegu expressed gratitude to MLA Zakir Hussain Laskar for his valuable contribution in finishing the project. He also said that building these residential schools is part of the government’s plan to improve education in Assam.

Meanwhile,  in the 2025 Budget presentation, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced plans to expand broadband connectivity to all government secondary schools and primary health centers in rural areas.

This initiative is designed to bridge the digital gap by providing better access to online learning for students and improving healthcare services in remote areas. It aims to enhance both education and healthcare quality across rural India, ensuring better connectivity and resources.

Similarly, State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on January 18 had clarified that the 25% reservation of seats for students from economically weaker sections of society or those below the poverty level (BPL) would be provided only in vernacular medium private schools.

Pegu had stated, "We will implement the 25% reservation for students from economically disadvantaged and weaker sections of society in vernacular medium schools like Assamese, Bengali, and Bodo medium, etc. However, this will not be applicable in English medium schools."
