GANGTOK: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed concerns over the shrinking population and highlighted the government’s efforts to address the issue. Sikkim’s population has declined to 6.38 lakh, which is lower than the 6.82 lakh Certificate of Identification (COI) holders recorded in 2011, raising concerns about demographic trends in the state.
During the 13th Foundation Day celebrations of Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) on Tuesday, CM Tamang stressed the need to address the population issue and confirmed the government's dedication to solving it.
As part of the state's efforts to address population decline while protecting the environment, the CM launched the "Mero Rukh Mero Santati" program in Sikkim. The goal is to plant 108 trees for every baby born, promoting ecological balance and connecting families with nature.
Meanwhile, last year, citing the state's low population density and abundant territory, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma had stressed the need to accelerate population growth in the state.
Lalduhoma said on the second day of Zofest 2024, held at Lalbuanga Hall in West Phaileng, that Mizoram has enough land to support more people.
"We need to encourage population growth, particularly among the Zofate," he had added. In keeping with its objective to address this demographic challenge, the Chief Minister had disclosed that his government was looking at incentives for families with more than three children in order to promote larger families.
