
SIVASAGAR: An extortion demand in the name of ULFA targeted an elderly couple residing at GNG Road, behind Bharali Complex in Assam's Sivasagar town. Acting swiftly, law enforcement agencies launched an investigation and identified those involved in the crime.
A special team conducted operations across various locations in Sivasagar during the intervening night of March 11 and 12, successfully apprehending the gang responsible. Authorities have pledged to take strict action against the accused. Further investigations are underway.
Similarly, Sivasagar police arrested two individuals in the Betbari area in Sivasagar last year in November for allegedly demanding money in the name of the banned militant outfit ULFA (Independent).
The accused were identified as Uma Changmai of Changmai Gaon, Betbari, and Pradip Bora of Raichai in Demow. According to police sources, both suspects were interrogated.
Meanwhile, two persons were arrested in Nagaon district last year in January for allegedly demanding extortion money from a local businessman using the name of the banned militant outfit ULFA-I.
The arrested individuals were identified as Fakar Uddin and Hussain Ali. Fakar is a native of the Ruporihat area in the district. Abdul Hasim was a supari businessman, and the accused, Fakar Uddin, demanded Rs 50 lakh in cash in the name of ULFA-I, according to police.
