SOUTH AFRICA: Ace swimmer from Assam, Elvis Ali Hazarika, has become the first Indian to complete a two-way swim between Robben Island and Cape Town in South Africa. Elvis described the experience as “nothing short of surreal” while battling cold, choppy waters and swimming alongside penguins, seals, dolphins, and curious fish.
In a heartfelt Facebook post on April 14, Elvis wrote, “This was one of the most mentally and physically demanding challenges I’ve ever faced. But with every stroke, I carried the spirit of India and the pride of my homeland, Assam.”
Dedicating the feat to the people of Assam on the occasion of Bihu, he added, “May it inspire others to dream big and never stop chasing the impossible.”
This achievement adds to a long list of records held by Elvis. In August 2024, he swam across the Gulf of Puck in the Baltic Sea. In March 2024, he became the first Assamese to solo swim Robben Island.
Prior milestones include swimming from Elephanta Island to the Gateway of India, crossing the English Channel two ways, and conquering the North Channel and Catalina Channel.
Elvis began making waves in 2021 when he became the first Assamese to swim 38 km from Dharamtar Jetty to the Gateway of India. With 68 national and 6 international gold medals, Elvis remains a symbol of resilience and inspiration.
