SILCHAR: In a bid to ensure pedestrian safety and reclaim public spaces, officials carried out an eviction drive in Assam's Silchar on Saturday, February 8. The drive took place in important areas like Sadarghat Point, Capital Point via Bhawal Point, Tullapatty, the Government Boys H.S. School area, and Court Compound Road.
Officials cleared encroachments that were blocking footpaths and affecting traffic in busy areas. They said this was needed to free up public spaces and keep the town organized. Police and municipal staff carried out the operation smoothly.
Meanwhile, to keep trains running smoothly and improve safety, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has taken action against people illegally occupying railway property. These encroachments have made maintenance difficult, created security risks, and led to problems like drug abuse. NFR regularly checks for illegal occupations and removes them to protect railway infrastructure.
On February 7, 2025, a large-scale eviction drive had been conducted at the New Guwahati Complex under the Lumding Division. Supervised by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Chandmari, the operation had involved 20 railway officials and staff from New Guwahati, along with 24 officers and personnel from the local police. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) had also assisted in the operation.
