NAGAON: In an operation conducted in Assam’s Nagaon district on Monday, a large quantity of live saving drugs being sold illegally was seized by the aurhorities.

According to reports, the Nagaon district drugs inspector carried out the operation at Doomdoomia market in Batadrawa area in the Nagaon district of Assam.

The life- saving drugs were being sold in violation of regulatory policy and the operation was carried out to prevent such activities, officials involved in the operation said.

The essential drugs were being illegally sold at the Doomdoomia weekly and bi-weekly markets, information received here suggested.

The operation was carried out yesterday based on allegations of discrepancy from the locals and officials seized huge quantities of life-saving drugs being sold illegally.

However, it has emerged that the trader who was involved in the illegal selling of the drugs managed to evade capture by the officials during the operation.

After the operation, a case under relevant sections of the criminal code has been lodged and further investigation as per the law into the matter will be conducted, said officials.

It was further stated that officials will be on sharp lookout to prevent such activities from taking place. Inspection of stocks of such medicine will be regularly done to thwart unscrupulous persons from carrying out such deals, officials maintained.

It should be mentioned here that on April 20, a massive quantity of drugs worth Rs 3 crore was seized by Assam police in Karbi Anglong district. Two smugglers involved in smuggling narcotic drugs were arrested in this connection.

Following intelligence inputs, a joint team of Karbi Anglong police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Wednesday evening set up a Naka checking at Lahorijan near Bokajan and a vehicle bearing registration number AS-11DC-4350 was intercepted.

John Das, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Bokajan, said "On thorough search of the vehicle, the police team recovered a total of 45 soap cases containing 529.36 grams of heroin. The heroin packets were hidden inside the spare wheel of the vehicle. We have arrested two persons from Manipur. The market value of the seized drugs is estimated at around Rs 3 crore.”

Th Boby (21 years old) and Pusham Abdul Hasim (26 years old) were identified as the arrested drug smugglers.
