Assam: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Takes Part In 'Bhoomi Puja' Of 120 MW Lower Kopili Hydroelectric Project At Longku, Dima Hasao

The 120 MW Lower Kopili Hydroelectric Project will increase electricity supply from clean energy by 469 GWh by 2025 & reduce greenhouse gas emission by 360K tons annually.

Haflong: On Thursday, the foundation stone for the 120 MW Lower Hydro-electric power (LKHEP) plant was laid at Longkhu in the district of Dima Hasao, Assam.

The 'Bhumi Pujan' of the project was performed by none other than Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Power Minister Bimal Borah, Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, NCHAC CEM Debolal Gorlosa and other officials.

The project is expected to be completed by June 2024. Also, the electricity supply from clean energy will be increased by 469 GWh & reduce greenhouse gas emission by 360K tons annually.

The total budget for the project is estimated to be $297 million and is funded by the Asian Development Bank, Government of India and Government of Assam.

The news was informed by the official Twitter handle of the office of Nirmala Sitharaman. The tweet read, "Smt @nsitharaman performs bhoomi pujan of 120 MW Lower Kopili Hydro Electric Project at Longku, Dima Hasao in Assam. Hon'ble Chief Minister of Assam Shri @himantabiswa and Power Minister of Assam Shri @BimalBorah119 are also present on the occasion."

The foundation stone to improve and upgrade 90kms of two-lane highway road from Haflong Tinialy to Lower Haflong was also laid by the Union Finance Minister at Diyungmukh in the district of Dima Hasao. This project will be funded by the Asian Development Bank under the Assam Road Network Improvement Project (ARNIP).

An amount of Rs. 900 crores will also be sanctioned by the Government of Assam for the building of roads in Dima Hasao in a bid to boost tourism with better road connectivity and improved economic growth.
