SILCHAR: Passengers of the Barak-Brahmaputra Express experienced a moment of panic on Saturday night, February 22, when smoke was observed coming from the train as it approached Behara Station, near the Kalain area of Assam's Cachar district, at around 9 PM. The incident prompted the train to come to a halt, leading to temporary chaos among the passengers.
Luckily, the cause of the smoke was brake binding, a condition in which the brake blocks grab the wheels too hard, creating friction and limiting movement. The problem was tackled immediately as informed by Kapinjal Kishor Sharma, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northeast Frontier Railway.
This is a case of smoke due to brake binding in the wheel of one of the sleeper coaches. The train has already left Behara Station after a delay of around 45 minutes," he stated.
As the situation unfolded, some passengers began to deboard the train with their luggage in a state of concern. However, the CPRO assured that there were no injuries or mishaps, emphasizing that the situation was under control.
"It was a case of brake binding, so there is no cause for concern," he added. The Barak Brahmaputra Express, which operates weekly between Silchar and New Tinsukia via Dimapur, resumed its journey without any further issues.
This incident is preceded by a similar one on January 22, when commuters on the Pushpak Express from Lucknow to Mumbai were put into a state of panic due to rumors of a fire. In that case, some passengers pulled the emergency chain and exited the train, leading to a tragic situation where another train on a parallel track struck several individuals, resulting in 13 fatalities.
