
UDALGURI: In a significant operation against wildlife smuggling, the Assam Forest Department seized two elephant tusks and arrested a suspect involved in the illegal wildlife trade in Udalguri district on Saturday.
The operation was spearheaded by Sheshidhar Reddy, Deputy Field Director of the Manas Tiger Project. The arrested individual has been identified as Sadhin Narzary, aged 54, a resident of Bongrun village in Udalguri.
The Assam Forest Department, in a post on X, described the arrest as a “breakthrough in a 5-month-long operation by Manas Tiger Reserve against a wildlife smuggling racket.” Officials confirmed that the elephant tusks, weighing approximately 13 kg, were recovered from Narzary’s residence.
Authorities are still searching for an accomplice who is on the run. The operation was led by Sheshidhar Reddy, with help from park staff and the Assam Forest Protection Force Battalion. A WagonR car (registration number AS 26 G 4933) and a mobile phone were also seized from the accused's house.
The raid took place with key officials present, including Bansbari Range Ranger Barin Boro, Bhuyanpara Ranger Vivekananda Pathak, Kahitama Beat Officer Nayanjyoti Pathak, and forest personnel. The Paneri Police Station in Udalguri district also helped in the operation. Further investigation is currently underway.
