SIVASAGAR: The rising water level in Dikhow, Desang and Darika rivers in Sivasagar district continues to wreak havoc in the area. Many areas have already been submerged due to rising water levels in Dikhow and Desang rivers.

People and domestic animals are affected badly due to the floods. On Monday, a man drowned in the flood waters of Dikhow river and died. According to sources, the person was washed away by the water of Dikhow river at Shimalutal in Cherekapar in the morning of Monday. Locals rescued the man immediately but he succumbed to his injuries. The deceased has been identified as Kushal Rabha (45).

Several revenue villages, including adjoining areas of Sivasagar town, are in the grip of flood waters. The Na-pam village of Sivasagar is submerged in the flood waters of the Dikhow river. Water is still flowing over the road in Shalmoria. Similarly, the water of the Dikhow river is flowing over the road connecting Baliaghat in Konwerpur. This has led to a panic situation in these areas. Simultaneously, in many places along the banks of Dikhow and Desang rivers, the flood waters are putting the people in danger. As per data provided by the Water Resources Department, the water in Dikhow river is flowing above the danger level. Dikhow river is flowing 1 metre above the danger level in Nazira and over 1.47 metres in Sivasagar. Similarly, the Desang river is above 0.80 metre in Patsaku and 0.46 metres in Nangalamra. Darika river is flowing 0.84 metres above the danger level.

Hundreds of people have already left their homes and taken shelter in safer places due to the floods. The Sivasagar district administration has set up relief camps at Sivasagar High Madrassa School in Sivasagar Town, 396 No. Thanamukh Primary School, Phukan Nagar Primary School, Vidyapeeth ME, Kamarfadia Primary School and Bongaon High School to provide for shelter to the flood affected people. One shelter camp is also set at Kenduguri High School in Nazira.

Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner and other officials are learnt to have inspected the flood affected areas and shelter camps to take stock of the situation. Relief materials are also being distributed among them for the Sivasagar district administration. NDRF and SDRF teams have also been deployed to provide assistance and create safe spaces for those affected by the floods.
