Dibrugarh: Four leopard cubs, estimated to be around four weeks old, were found abandoned in a garden at Sasoni Bhokot village in Assam’s Dibrugarh district on Tuesday morning.

The cubs were discovered in a secluded area of a garden owned by local farmer Pramod Mahanta, drawing a crowd of curious onlookers.

Upon being informed, the forest department promptly sent a team, including veterinarians, to ensure the cubs’ safety. Officials stated that the cubs are in stable condition and will be relocated to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) near Kaziranga National Park, where they will receive specialized care and attention. The CWRC is experienced in managing such cases and is well-equipped to handle the needs of young wildlife.

The forest department is investigating the circumstances that led to the abandonment and is monitoring the area for any signs of the mother leopard. Officials informed that leopard cubs typically remain with their mother until they are about two years old, learning crucial survival skills.

However, cubs as young as four weeks may be orphaned or abandoned for various reasons. By three months of age, cubs start accompanying their mother on hunting trips to develop vital skills.

The discovery has highlighted the challenges faced by wildlife in human-dominated landscapes. Authorities emphasize the importance of timely intervention in such situations to ensure the well-being and survival of young, vulnerable animals like these leopard cubs.
