GUWAHATI: The Assam government has decided to give a cash reward of Rs 25,000 to each participant, including junior dancers, for their contribution to a historic cultural event celebrating 200 years of the Assam tea industry.

The announcement comes ahead of the grand Jhumoir Binandini programme, scheduled for February 24 at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati. More than 8,000 young people from Assam’s tea gardens will take part in the world’s largest Jhumoir dance, a traditional dance that is an important part of their community’s heritage.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the news on social media platform X, emphasizing the cultural significance of the performance. “The weight of history is on their shoulders,” he stated. “For a long time, Assam’s tea community has been trapped in poverty and neglect. We want to end this and celebrate their glorious culture in a way not seen before.”

In a show of encouragement, CM Sarma, accompanied by Team Assam, visited the rehearsals to meet the artists and extend his support. The event, expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also aims to set a Guinness World Record, bringing global recognition to Assam’s tea community and its rich traditions.

As Assam gears up for this historic celebration, the event is set to shine a spotlight on the resilience and artistic spirit of the tea garden community.
