GUWAHATI: Former Handloom and Textile Department Director Kabita Deka was found dead in her residence at the Jalukbari area of Guwahati, Assam, on Thursday. It was reported that the body was seen early this morning and that there is an initial hypothesis that it was a suicide. The police are now investigating how she died.
This is a tragic event after Deka's name cropped up in a case of alleged corruption under investigation by the Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell (CM's SVC). She was accused of anomalies in appointments that were done within the Handloom and Textile Department between 2019-20. In connection with the ongoing investigation, her home was raided last month.
Apart from corruption allegations, Deka was also involved in a land scandal, which added to her legal woes. The police are yet to officially declare the cause of death, and an autopsy is likely to shed more light on the issue.
As investigations progress, the authorities are having a tough time making sense of what happened leading up to Deka's death, and the community reflects on what exactly Deka's death signifies when invoked against such robust accusations. The case has generated massive interest as it is centered on governance and accountability within the state administration.
