DIBRUGARH: Dr. Rupjyoti Dutta, an endoscopic and laparoscopic surgeon from Dibrugarh, successfully performed a high-risk colonoscopy under general anesthesia on January 29, 2025, at HM Hospital. The procedure was carried out to remove an alcohol bottle stuck in the sigmoid colon of a patient from Arunachal Pradesh.

This successful operation showcases the progress in endoscopic and laparoscopic techniques, highlighting the region's ability to handle critical medical emergencies with advanced surgical skills.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, Dr. Bhabajyoti Bora from Guwahati participated in an expert consultation at IIT Kharagpur on January 23, 2025, discussing the challenges of immunization in rural India. He focused on the role of technology and apps in improving immunization access in geographically diverse and resource-limited areas.

Dr. Bora, who has worked with the WHO on the Polio Eradication Programme and the UN Ebola Mission, joined experts from across India to share insights. Organized by IIT Kharagpur’s Research and Development Dean, Professor Goutam Saha, the consultation aimed to enhance India’s immunization efforts using advanced technology.

Additionally, in a significant step to ease patients' challenges with accessing prescribed medicines, the Assam government introduced a new rule, effective from February 15.

The rule mandated that doctors at state-run hospitals prescribe only those medicines available in their respective hospital pharmacies. This move aimed to reduce the burden on patients, particularly those who had to buy medicines from private pharmacies at higher prices.

To ensure accountability, a helpline was introduced, allowing patients to file complaints if doctors prescribed unavailable medicines. The rule also required that prescriptions include the helpline number for transparency.
