BOKO: Garo National Council (GNC) withdrew the boycott of RHAC Election, which will be held on April 2. GNC organized an executive meet at Santipur Village Community Hall in Boko-Chaygaon LAC under Kamrup District, where they took the decision. The Garo Women Council, Garo Youth Council, and other sister Garo organizations, leaders and village headmen of several Garo-inhabited villages of both Kamrup and Goalpara districts under the RHAC took part in the executive meet.
It is to be mentioned that the Garo organizations have been demanding the separate Garo Autonomous Council (GAC) for a decade and due to this reason, the Garo people boycotted the past two RHAC elections. The meeting was presided over by Enindra Marak, Secretary, GNC, where Suneet P Marak, Advisor, GNC, Allen Brooks, Spokesperson of the Assam Christian Forum, and other Garo leaders took part.
During his speech, Allen Brooks urged the Garo people to cast their votes in the RHAC Election. Moreover, Brooks explained the benefits of being a part of the Indian Constitution and the election process. He emphasized that the RHAC works not only for the Rabha Community but for the comprehensive development of all the communities comprising Bodo, Garo, Gurkha, Hajong, Koch, and other communities living in the RHAC area. Brooks further said that casting votes to their favourite candidates will be more fruitful for the community, in which they will get more development schemes as well. “In the Kamrup and Goalpara districts, there are no MLAs belonging from either Rabha or Garo communities and thus others have taken benefits,” said Brooks during his speech. He also assured that the Garo Community living in Assam will definitely get the GAC. Whether the council will be under Sixth Schedule or Seventh Schedule of Indian Constitution is to be decided.
Suneet P Marak, Advisor, GNC, said that the GNC and other Garo organizations have decided to withdraw the boycott of the RHAC Election. “Garo people will cast their votes in the forthcoming RHAC Election. However, their long-pending demand for GAC will continue,” emphasized Suneet P Marak. Marak further said that in the RHAC area from Kamrup District’s Rani to Goalpara District’s Jayramkushi, Garo people are living in more than 300 villages out of the total 779 villages and it will be a factor in the RHAC Election. “Garo people will also take part in the Panchayat and Assembly elections and continue the demand for the GAC,” added SP Marak.
