GOALPARA: The Goalpara Police, with support from the district administration, Excise, and Agriculture departments, successfully destroyed opium poppy cultivation spread across about ten bighas of land on Thursday. The illegal cultivation was located in West Fetengapara Char under Chunari Police Station.

The operation was led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Border and followed all necessary procedures. During the mission, the team seized illegal items in the presence of an executive magistrate, excise inspector, agriculture officer, and the OCs of Lakhipur and Chunari PS. The destroyed opium is estimated to be worth around Rs. 2 crore in the international market.

Earlier this month, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Goalpara Police had destroyed 170 bighas (over 56 acres) of poppy cultivation, estimated to be worth more than Rs. 27 crores.

In a post on X, he humorously addressed local criminals, saying, “Sorry to spoil your planned Udta Assam party!” A video showing the destruction of the crops with a tractor was also shared by the CM.

Remote areas of Assam, particularly in Char regions, are notorious for illegal activities like poppy cultivation, timber smuggling, and illegal sawmills. The Goalpara district administration has previously destroyed poppy crops on 40 bighas in Sonari Sar and in Shialmari in 2021 and 2023.
