DIBRUGARH: The Eastern Assam Chamber of Commerce & Industry (EACCI) has expressed concerns about rising security threats in Dibrugarh’s business areas after a number of burglaries have made traders worried. In a letter to the Officer-in-Charge of Dibrugarh Sadar Thana, the Chamber pointed out the growing number of thefts and break-ins, asking for quick police action.
In the early hours of February 6, unidentified miscreants targeted four shops along Jayanta Dutta Path and A.T. Road. Cash and goods were stolen from Sohan Lal Chunnilal and Aadinath Traders, while the shutters of SS Trading and Moolchand Manojkumar were damaged in attempted break-ins. The incident has raised concerns among traders, who fear that even key business zones are no longer secure.
EACCI also mentioned that similar burglaries took place on January 23 at Vaibhav Sanitation in Chiring Chapori and Capital Hardware on A.T. Road. Even though police complaints were filed at Amollapatty Thana, there have been no arrests or recoveries, which raises concerns about the police's effectiveness. The Chamber pointed out that these crimes happened just before Republic Day, a time when security is usually stricter, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
Besides the burglaries, the Chamber also mentioned criminals using bikes with covered number plates, regular thefts from parked trucks, and increasing threats to street vendors. With Dibrugarh now being Assam's second capital and the state government promoting investment through Advantage Assam 2.0, EACCI warned that if crime isn’t controlled, it could hurt business confidence and scare off potential investors.
