GOLAGHAT: In a significant operation, the team of Golaghat Police conducted an anti-drug operation under Golaghat PS, leading to the seizure of 18.56 grams of heroin. The operation also led to the arrest of 2 male and 1 female drug peddlers.
Golaghat police conducted their second major drug disposal operation in three weeks, destroying seized narcotics valued over Rs 12 lakh at Golaghat police reserve earlier on January 18.
Golaghat SP Rajen Singh, who led the disposal procedure alongside other senior police officials, oversaw the incineration of heroin and cannabis seized during various operations across the district between Jan 1 and Jan 17.
"The destruction was carried out in compliance with Section 52-A of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. Before proceeding with the disposal, we ensured that all necessary samples were preserved for legal purposes," the SP said.
The latest disposal operation follows a similar exercise conducted on Dec 30, 2024, where the department destroyed confiscated drugs valued at Rs 1.36 crore.
"Swift destruction of these substances is paramount due to various security and practical concerns. We face challenges related to secure storage facilities, and there's always a risk of theft or pilferage. Moreover, these substances are hazardous by nature, making prolonged storage potentially dangerous," Singh added.
Golaghat police have urged citizens to continue supporting their anti-drug initiatives by reporting any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking.
