GUWAHATI: The Assam government has sanctioned an additional Rs 116.20 crore for the expansion of approach roads to the soon-to-be-operational Integrated Terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in a major step to enhance connectivity.

This will raise the total project budget to Rs 2474 crore from the initially allocated Rs 2358 crore.

The Integrated Terminal will greatly be welcomed at LGBI Airport as it will add greatly to the passenger-handling capacity of the airport. Therefore, it will have a passenger-handling capacity of more than 13 million passengers per year. So, to cater to these requirements, the Assam government has upgraded the connectivity between VIP Junction and Dharapur.

The state Cabinet-approved additional funding for these critical infrastructure upgrades underscores the urgency to complete them. With the revised budget, authorities are aiming to speed up the construction timeline so that the road expansion project is implemented smoothly and on time. The improvements are expected to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance the flow of passengers, and complement the upgraded facilities at the airport.

These enhanced approach roads, once complete, will become crucial in meeting the booming aviation requirements of Assam and the wider northeastern region. The project is expected to enhance connectivity to the integrated terminal, thus improving travel experiences for passengers to and from the airport.

This initiative is in line with the wider goals of promoting regional connectivity, fostering economic growth, and positioning Assam as a key hub in India's aviation network. The completion of the Integrated Terminal and its supporting infrastructure will change LGBI Airport into a modern gateway for both domestic and international travelers.
