GUWAHATI: The Assam government has launched the one-time settlement (OTS) plan under the Assam Vehicle Scrapping Policy 2022, which will allow the owners of unfit vehicles to de-register them by paying 25 percent of their outstanding tax and dues. This has been intended to remove environmentally hazardous vehicles from the roads while still providing financial relief to their owners.

Under this scheme, owners of vehicles who are willing to deregister will be entitled to a tax exemption of up to 75%. Gautam Das, Special Duty Officer, Assam Transport Department, urged the vehicle owners to avail themselves of this chance before the deadline of March 31, 2025. He said that deregistering unfit vehicles would make the transport system safer and cleaner in the state. He also said that, in the future, the state will be significantly more secure and have cleaner transportation if unfit vehicles are deregistered.

As per the existing motor vehicle laws, unfit vehicles are supposed to have their registrations canceled from the district transport office; otherwise, the vehicle keeps showing active in the government VAHAN portal and keeps on fetching taxes and penalties, which can prove very costly for owners.

Furthermore, the transport department has agreed that those whose vehicle owners present a deregistration certificate at a Registered Vehicle Scrappage Facility (RVSF) and apply for scrapping will get a Certificate of Deposit. The certificate will attract 25% tax concessions on new purchases for private vehicles for up to 15 years and 15% for commercial vehicles up to 8 years. The Assam government encourages participation in this scheme so as to comply with environmental and transport requirements.
