GUWAHATI: In a major relief for students studying in private schools not affiliated with the Assam State Secondary Education Board (ASSEB), the Assam government has introduced a conditional provision enabling them to register with government schools to ensure their eligibility for the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination. The development was informed by the Advocate General of Assam during a hearing before the Gauhati High Court. As per the government’s submission, students from non-recognised private schools will now be allowed to enroll in Class 9 at government schools to maintain academic legitimacy and meet HSLC eligibility requirements.
However, the shift to government schools will not be automatic. Students must be admitted as regular candidates, and they must strictly adhere to attendance and academic performance standards laid out by the government and the education board. Authorities clarified that simply transferring schools without meeting these conditions will not suffice. In parallel, the state government has issued an official notification cancelling direct HSLC exam registrations for students enrolled in non-affiliated private schools. As per board guidelines, only those students who are formally registered through recognised institutions in Class 9 will be allowed to sit for the HSLC exams.
This measure comes amid growing concerns among parents and students whose schools were operating without official board recognition. The new provision ensures that students do not lose out on board examination opportunities due to administrative lapses in school affiliations. Education officials have urged affected students and guardians to contact their nearest government schools to begin the enrollment process and meet the required conditions in time for the HSLC registration cycle.
