GUWAHATI: Aiming to reduce conflicts regarding land ownership, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that inter-religious land transactions in the state will now need government approval. This initiative aims to regulate land sales across religious communities, prevent potential disputes, and safeguard the rights of indigenous people.

Speaking on the topic, the Chief Minister claimed the state's authority in carrying out important land policies aligned with the Assam Accord. “We have the right to implement the recommendations of the Biplab Sharma Committee regarding Clause 6 of the Assam Accord,” he stated.

He further explained that the government will ensure land protection for indigenous communities in specific areas. “Under this, we will ensure that in selected blocs, only indigenous people can sell and purchase land. This is one of the recommendations that we have accepted,” he said.

Further explaining the rationale behind the decision, the Chief Minister discussed the previous state government's ban on inter-religious land transfers.

“We banned inter-religious transfer of land last year, but that ban cannot continue under the Constitution of India. So, we have allowed inter-religious sale and purchase of land, but only with state government approval,” he clarified. This move comes as part of Assam’s broader efforts to protect indigenous land rights while upholding constitutional and legal clauses.
