Assam Govt. Serves Notice To Kaziranga Animal Corridors Encroaches

GUWAHATI: The Assam state government has recently served an eviction notice to the encroachers of the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve.

The notice is issued to clear at least 9 animal corridors that include Panbari, Haldibari, Harmati, Amguri, Deosur, Hatidanti, Bagori, Kanchanjuri and Chirang.

Assam chief secretary Jishnu Baruah in a letter to CEC (Central Empowered Committee) stated informing about the latest notice served to the encroachers of the world-famous Kaziranga National Park.

Meanwhile, the chief secretary has sought more time from the CEC to clear the areas and complete the eviction process.

Among the 9 corridors, seven that include Harmati, Amguri, Deosur, Hatidanti, Bagori, Kanchanjuri and Chirang falls in the Nagaon district of Assam and two corridors Panbari and Haldibari falls in the adjoining areas of the Golaghat district.

It is reported that the encroachers were allegedly involved in violation of the earlier order issued by the Supreme Court in the year 2019.

In the previous order by SC, the court had clearly banned owning of private lands and any construction in the 9 identified animal corridors of Kaziranga National Park.

Environment activist Rohit Choudhury in 2021 had filed a complaint stating that the order of the Supreme Court was allegedly violated in the regions of Hatidandi, Amguri, Harmati and Kanchanjuri which are regarded as Kaziranga's animal corridor.

On the basis of the complaint by the environmental activist, in October last year, the Central Empowered Committee has directed the government of Assam to take required action against the encroachers for such violation of the SC order.

In the recent letter, the Assam government informed the authorities of CEC that the Nagaon administration has already taken the necessary measure in this regard by serving notices to the owners of restaurants, a total of six Dhaba and resorts located in the region of animal corridors.

The state government also informed that the Golaghat administration has also served notices to the owners of two resorts in the area of the animal corridor.

In taking action to clear the animal corridor and in completing the eviction process, all high volt illuminating lights at the construction site have been removed along with government lands.
