GUWAHATI: In a significant breakthrough, the Assam government has announced the withdrawal of all the pending cases against Koch Rajbongshi community members that are being heard in the state's Foreigners' Tribunals. The move, made public by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, effectively eliminates the 'D' or doubtful voter tag that has hit many from the community.

In a press conference after a crucial cabinet meeting, CM Sarma pointed out the enormity of the decision, saying, "There are 28,000 cases pending in different Foreigners' Tribunals in the state against individuals of the community. The cabinet has made a historic decision of revoking the cases with immediate effect."

This move is a reflection of the state government's acknowledgment of the Koch Rajbongshis as an indigenous people who are part of Assam's social and cultural fabric. The Chief Minister recognized the difficulties experienced by members of the community, highlighting their economic hardships and long suffering.

Assam's Foreigners' Tribunals, which were set up under the Foreigners Act of 1946, identify the citizenship status of individuals who are suspected to be undocumented immigrants. There are presently 100 such tribunals in the state.

The Koch Rajbongshi community is not only prominent in Assam but also has a significant presence in West Bengal, Meghalaya, and regions of Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. This recent government decision is expected to provide substantial relief to thousands of Koch Rajbongshi individuals who have faced years of uncertainty regarding their citizenship status.
