
GUWAHATI: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam, filed a complaint against Loni Barman, Nazir of the office of the Assistant Commissioner, State GST, District Sribhumi, for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs. 10,000 from a complainant.
The bribe was sought to release the complainant’s vehicle, which was loaded with goods. Unwilling to comply with the unlawful demand, the complainant approached the Directorate, seeking legal action against the accused public servant.
Acting on the complaint, the Directorate swiftly organized a trap operation on February 12, 2025. A specialized team from the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption wing set up the operation near a Dhaba/Restaurant in the Nilambazar area, District Sribhumi. During the operation, Loni Barman was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of Rs. 10,700 from the complainant. The tainted money was immediately recovered from his possession and seized in the presence of independent witnesses, ensuring transparency and adherence to legal procedures.
Upon gathering substantial evidence against the accused, the Directorate's team arrested Loni Barman on the spot. Following the arrest, a case was officially registered at the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Police Station on the same day under ACB P.S. Case No. 19/2025. The case falls under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, as amended in 2018.
