DOOMDOOMA: In a shocking incident on Wednesday night, suspected green tea leaf thieves allegedly opened fire at night guards on duty at the Digulturrang Tea Estate, located under Baghjan Police Station in Tinsukia district. The tea estate is owned by Assam Company India.
The region has witnessed repeated thefts of green tea leaves from estates like Baghjan, Deamoolie, Rupai, and Digulturrang. However, the situation escalated dangerously around midnight when a gang of suspected thieves opened fire after being spotted by a night watchman while allegedly plucking green tea leaves.
Fortunately, none of the guards were injured during the incident. However, a vehicle belonging to the tea estate was hit and damaged by bullets. According to sources, the thieves fled the scene after workers rushed out upon hearing the gunshots.
In the aftermath, various tea community organizations, including the Assam Tea Tribe Students’ Association (ATTSA) and the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), staged a protest in front of Baghjan Police Station on Thursday. They demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible and a halt to the ongoing green tea leaf thefts.
ATTSA leaders announced that they would submit a memorandum to the District Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police, urging a high-level investigation into the incident. They also warned that if effective action is not taken soon, they will be forced to initiate widespread democratic agitation.
