GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has revealed that the new bridge connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati will be named Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu, in honor of the legendary Kamrupa King, Kumar Bhaskar Varma.
The announcement is part of the state's initiative to celebrate and honor its rich historical and cultural heritage. Kumar Bhaskar Varma, who governed the region in the 7th century, is revered for his contributions to Kamrupa's prosperity and his efforts in enhancing the cultural and political importance of Assam.
Naming the bridge after him is regarded as a tribute to the legendary king's enduring legacy. Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously confirmed that the construction of the highly anticipated Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge is progressing as planned and is expected to be finished by July 2025.
Once completed, the bridge will be toll-free for all vehicles, with the exception of trucks and commercial buses.
The Chief Minister provided updates following his visit to the construction site on the South Bank. "The construction of the Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge is progressing smoothly, and we aim to inaugurate it for the public after July 2025," he stated.
Upon completion, the Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge is expected to greatly alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity between these two vital parts of the city, thereby strengthening Assam's infrastructure and development initiatives.
