GUWAHATI: A 17-year-old girl died in a private hospital in Assam, suspected to be the first case of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) in the state during this season. The Class-12 student had been admitted to Pratiksha Hospital about ten days ago. She was diagnosed with the rare neurological condition, according to a pediatrician at the facility, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

GBS is characterized by a sudden onset of numbness and muscle weakness, which often leads to severe complications. It was noted by the doctor that the girl's condition worsened rapidly and required ventilator support. She, despite treatment, died during the night.

The pediatrician mentioned that this case is a matter of grave concern because GBS cases have not been reported for the past six months in Assam. He mentioned that a wave of GBS cases has been observed in the whole of India, and states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, and South Indian states have complained of similar symptoms. It is feared that more cases may emerge in the coming days.

The girl was from Bihar but was staying in Assam with her family. Her parents had arranged for an air ambulance to transfer her to Delhi for advanced treatment, but she did not survive.

Another senior pediatrician said that although GBS can lead to paralysis, most patients recover with proper care, and there is no need for public panic regarding the condition.
