HAFLONG: With the theme like ‘Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage,’ World Soil Day was celebrated for the first time in Dima Hasao on Thursday with great enthusiasm.

The celebration was organized by the Haflong Soil Conservation Division, wherein Noha Daime, a member of the N C Hills Autonomous Council on behalf of NCHAC, attended as the chief guest, while James Aind, ADC, Enghi, SDAO, Nampui, SDAO, Baosring Nunisa, subject matter specialist, KVK Dima Hasao, and representatives from the Cachar and Karbi Anglong soil conservation departments attended as the guests of honour.

The day’s programme started with the lighting of the holy lamp by chief guests along with other guests and was followed by the singing of Jatiya Sangeet.

World Soil Day is celebrated annually on December 5 to highlight the importance of healthy soil. The day serves as a reminder of the critical role soils play in our ecosystem and the need to protect and conserve this invaluable resource for future generations. It also aims to raise awareness about soil degradation. This natural resource is made up of a mixture of minerals, organic matter, gases, liquids, and organisms.

Baosring Nunisa, subject matter specialist, KVK Dima Hasao, as the resource person, explained vividly the importance of healthy soil and informed the gatherings about the government’s approaches to enhance the production by maintaining the health of soil.

Chief guest Daime requested the Soil Conservation department to organize such an awareness program of soil conservation in the near future involving the public on a large scale since the importance of healthy soil matters for each and every citizen. He also appreciated the Soil Conservation department for organizing the event for the first time in Dima Hasao.

Divisional Officer, Haflong Soil Conservation Tafikur Rahman, in his welcome speech, dwelt at length about the importance of the celebration while stressing the need for enhancing the budget allocation of the department since the department has to play an important role. He also narrated the activities of the department to create awareness about the soil health and also the jhum cycle since in Dima Hasao, jhum cultivation is the prime means of agriculture.

The successful entrepreneurs and self-help groups were awarded certificates and mementos for their praiseworthy contributions to soil conservation and proper use of soil.
