GUWAHATI: A headmaster at Gasbari High School in Assam's Kamrup district was allegedly attacked by relatives of students for a delay in the distribution of question papers during the Class 10 final exam.

The incident occurred on Saturday when the head teacher, in-charge of the exam center, did not provide the question papers in time, leading to a one-hour delay. The examination was due to begin at 9 am, but the head teacher only arrived with the papers at 10 am. The delay put the parents in a state of anger, and some of them pushed and confronted the head teacher.

After the scuffle, a police squad was sent to the examination center to maintain order. The examination, which was to start at 9 am, was delayed, but students were given an extra 30 minutes to finish their question papers. Police affirmed that the delay was due to personal reasons by the head teacher and, as an investigation has been launched, no official charges have been made.

The Director of Secondary Education, Mamta Hojai, suspended the head teacher Ashok Choudhary following the incident, and she directed a departmental inquiry. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu has confirmed that Muktaram Patowari, head teacher of Gopalthan Anchalik High School, has been appointed to manage the examination center for the rest of the exam session.

The High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) Exam 2025, organized by the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB), began with 429,449 candidates enrolled, comprising 190,653 boys and 238,796 girls.
