Tezpur: Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal inaugurated the newly constructed Garubandha Model Hospital under the Borchala constituency in Sonitpur district on Sunday.

Built under the National Health Mission at a cost of approximately Rs 5.98 crore, the hospital is equipped with modern facilities, including eight OPD units, a two-bed aseptic delivery room, a major operation theatre, a four-bed emergency ward, X-ray and ultrasound services, a 12-bed general ward for women, a 12-bed general ward for men, four paying cabins, and a two-bed isolation ward. Additionally, the hospital premises include four residential quarters for doctors and nurses.

Speaking at the inaugural event, Minister Singhal emphasized the significance of this hospital for the people of Garubandha and the greater Missamari area. He noted that under Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s visionary leadership, Assam’s healthcare sector is undergoing a transformative change. The inauguration of this hospital reflects the government’s commitment to providing quality healthcare to all.

The foundation stone for the hospital was laid in 2019 by then-Health Minister and current Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Minister Singhal highlighted that the government has successfully fulfilled its promise to the people of this region by completing the project. Although now part of the Borchala constituency, this area was previously under the Dhekiajuli constituency, which Minister Singhal represented. He stressed the urgent need for strong healthcare infrastructure in this region and expressed confidence that the 30-bed hospital will enhance medical services and improve overall healthcare accessibility for residents of Garubandha and nearby areas.

The minister also announced that efforts are underway to complete the recruitment process for doctors, nurses, and staff by March. He emphasized that the provision of residential quarters for medical personnel will ensure their presence during emergencies. However, he also noted that infrastructure alone does not define a great healthcare institution—it requires dedicated and compassionate service from medical professionals. He urged the local community to support and encourage doctors, nurses, paramedics, and staff to fulfil their responsibilities with commitment. Minister Singhal praised the ‘double-engine government’ under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, stating that Assam has made significant progress in healthcare and various other sectors. He highlighted that the state is not just moving forward—it is racing ahead on the path of development. He also stressed the importance of preventive healthcare and encouraged citizens to adopt a healthy lifestyle, including yoga, walking, and regular exercise.
