GUWAHATI: The Higher Secondary Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) 2024 in Assam, initially set for December 29, has been postponed.

The Gauhati High Court intervened after a group of candidates filed a petition seeking a postponement, citing the release of a new syllabus only days before the exam. The Directorate of Secondary Education (DSE) announced on Saturday that the exam has been rescheduled to January 19, 2025.

New admit cards will be issued on January 3 via designated websites. The DSE had introduced a revised syllabus on December 5, with the original exam date scheduled for December 29.

Admit cards were later issued on December 15. However, the High Court ruled that the exam could not take place as planned, requiring a minimum 15-day gap between the release of the new syllabus and the exam date.

The abrupt syllabus change, just 22 days before the original exam date, caused considerable uncertainty among the candidates.

Meanwhile, a large group of unemployed youth gathered in front of the Shiksha Bhavan in Agartala City on Monday to protest the delay in the publication of recruitment notifications for TET, STGT, and STPGT. The protesters also submitted a deputation to the TRBT Chairman, Dr. Pratyush Ranjan Deb, demanding immediate action.

One of the protestors said, “The TET and STGT exams were conducted in 2022, and it’s been two years with no new recruitment process. Despite multiple appeals to the Chief Minister and TRBT, we have received no proper response”.

Many of the protesters are qualified graduates, holding B.Ed or D.eL.Ed degrees. They had expressed frustration over the increasing number of B.Ed graduates in the state without job opportunities.
