TEZPUR: The 25th Ex-Servicemen Rally was held at the historic Ghoramari Rural Stadium in Tezpur, featuring a day-long programme dedicated to honouring former soldiers. The event was organized by the 27th Rajput Regiment in collaboration with the Fourth Corps of the Army and the Sonitpur District Sainik Board. The event paid homage to the fallen and injured soldiers from the Sino-Indian War, Indo-Pakistan Wars, Bangladesh Liberation War, and the 1999 Kargil War, along with their families.

The rally was graced by Brigadier Shailendra Pandey of the 4 Corps, who formally felicitated the injured and ex-servicemen, acknowledging their sacrifices for the nation. During the event, war veterans Kumud Chandra Das and Biren Saikia reminisced about their experiences on the battlefield, becoming emotional as they recalled the intense challenges they faced. They firmly expressed that they had no regrets about their injuries in service of the nation and, if needed, were still willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Despite their age and physical limitations, several veterans in wheelchairs participated in the event, demonstrating their unwavering spirit. They were warmly received and honoured by the serving soldiers and officers. Among them was Biren Saikia from Sangia Majorchuk, Jamugurihat in Sonitpur, a 1971 Kargil War veteran, who became deeply emotional as he reminisced about his wartime experiences.

Saikia, who lost both legs during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, shared his memories with the media. He recalled the war declaration on December 3, 1971, and the events leading up to December 5, when he and his unit captured the Trishul Second Defense Post in Kargil. Severely injured, he remained in a critical condition for seven days before being rescued. Even after more than five decades, he continues to live with the memories of the war, embodying resilience and patriotism.

Both Das and Saikia urged the younger generation to join the Indian Armed Forces and contribute to the nation’s defence. They extended their full support for the Agniveer Scheme, a central government initiative aimed at strengthening the military by recruiting young soldiers.
