NALBARI: The Hospital Management Committee has demanded that the 30-bed First Referral Unit (FRU) at Tihu in Nalbari district be upgraded to a Civil Hospital at the earliest.
In this connection, a delegation of the Hospital Management Committee met local MLA and former minister Chandramohan Patowary on Friday evening and submitted a memorandum outlining its demands. The 30-bed rural hospital at Tihu was inaugurated on March 14, 1990, during the AGP government and upgraded to a First Referral Unit on December 4, 2003. Located on nearly seven bighas of land in the heart of Tihu town, the hospital provides outpatient services to more than 300 patients every day. However, limited medical facilities have made it difficult for many patients to access advanced treatment.
Several other healthcare facilities, including the Mahatma Gandhi Adarsha Hospital at Makhibaha, as well as health centres at Haribhanga, Jalkhana-Bhathuwakhana, Siyalmari, Gowardal and Nij-Namati, are also reportedly functioning under the Tihu FRU. The Tihu FRU remains a major healthcare support system for people across the region. However, the lack of adequate modern and advanced medical facilities has forced many patients to seek treatment elsewhere. Against this backdrop, the demand to upgrade the hospital into a Civil Hospital has gained momentum.
During the meeting with Patowary, the delegation demanded the appointment of specialist doctors, establishment of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), repair of government residential quarters and comprehensive improvement of the hospital's infrastructure. The delegation comprised Tihu Municipal Board Chairperson and Hospital Management Committee President Himani Majumdar, Tihu Hospital Deputy Superintendent Dr Tapan Talukdar, BPM Pulakesh Das, committee members Kishor Kumar Sharma, Pankaj Bezbaruah and Biman Kalita, and Tihu Town Club Executive President Naudhan Majumdar.
