HOJAI: Despite the widespread nature of illegal gambling activities, around 20 to 30 gamblers gather every day at Gandhi Maidan in Hojai, where illegal gambling takes place. However, drawing a larger crowd, the situation escalated on the eve of Uruka, with many gamblers engrossed in high-stakes card games involving lakhs of rupees.
The excessive public gambling goes on unimpeded throughout the day, raising serious concern among the local residents. Hence, after the arrival of a journalist at the scene, all of the gamblers panicked and left their activities behind, running away as if they were running a marathon and leaving behind the gambling setup.
Locals claim that not a single gambler has ever been arrested, even though police are frequently present in the area. Since gambling continues to thrive openly in the heart of the town with little to no deterrence, the lack of enforcement has raised questions about how effective the authorities are at combating it.
Meanwhile, Assam Police successfully apprehended two notorious gamblers in a targeted operation conducted in the region last year in January. The individuals, identified as Maniruddin and Eman Ali, have been accused of engaging in illicit gambling activities for an extended period.
The operation, spearheaded by the newly assigned Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhing Police Station, Tushar Jyoti Bora, marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to curb unlawful activities in the area.
