The International Day of the Girl Child was celebrated in Lakhimpur district on Wednesday in a befitting manner. Every year, the event is observed on October 11 to focus on the importance of girls’ education, their rights and to promote gender equality.

LAKHIMPUR: The International Day of the Girl Child was celebrated in Lakhimpur district on Wednesday in a befitting manner. Every year, the event is observed on October 11 to focus on the importance of girls’ education, their rights and to promote gender equality. This year, the theme of the International Day of the Girl Child is, ‘Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being’.

By focusing on the theme, the Department of Women and Child Development and Lakhimpur district administration, with the technical support of District Hub for Empowerment Women, Lakhimpur, organized a ‘Matri Kishori Mela’ at Muktijoddha Gajadhar Kurmi TG Model High School, located at Dejoo, under the Beti Bachao Beti Pardhao programme.

The programme was hosted by Prangana Borah- District Mission Coordinator, wherein Assistant Commissioner-cum-District Social Welfare Officer Jyotikona Chutia along with Secretary of DLSA-Lakhimpur, Assistant Superintendent of Posts, officials of DHEW, OSC, IGSSS-UNICEF, and other officials were present.

In order to promote mass awareness regarding the event, different kinds of activities like the establishment of a knowledge camp through various departments, health camp, SSY registration camp, screening of awareness movies and documentaries were also organized. Moreover, friendly sports events like musical chair, blindfold games were also organized among the local women, and adolescent girls during the celebration of the event.

BARPETA: On the occasion of International Girl Child Day, an awareness programme was organized for the students by the District Legal Services Authority, Barpeta in association with Barpeta Girls’ College. Conducted by Rita Moni Bayan, Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy, Barpeta Girls’ College, the awareness programme started with a speech by Barnali Sarma, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, Barpeta, who spoke about the significance of observing International Girl Child Day. She also laid emphasis on building collective awareness in respect of equal rights of the girl child.

Taking part in the programme as resource person, Hazrat Fatima, Assistant Officer, Legal Aid Défense Counsel, Barpeta spoke about various problems faced by the girl children. She mainly put emphasis on the equal rights that the girl children can enjoy in matters of education, employment, law etc. Speaking about the problem of child marriage, she opined that girls must remain aware of this matter.

Another resource person, Bhrigumani Roy, lawyer of Legal Aid Defense Counsel, Barpeta said that the girls must come forward to prove their capabilities in various fields of activity. Dr Birinchi Kumar Das, Principal of Barpeta Girls’ College, said that since time immemorial, girls have been facing negligence and deprivation in society and in the family too. He said that the girls must be aware of their rights and for that, they will need proper education.
