NALBARI: The Panchanan Medhi Memorial Award is an initiative instituted in memory of nationally acclaimed educationist Panchanan Medhi, who was honoured with the National Teacher Award in 1975 by the President of India. Late Medhi—a visionary educator and committed social reformer—established the Sapatgram Amalgamated Academy in Dhubri district during India’s fight for independence, with the aim of instilling core educational values in the younger generation.
To carry forward his ideals, the Panchanan Medhi Research and Development Foundation (PMRDF) initiated the award in 2023 to recognize students from Nalbari district who secure the highest marks in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) Examination each year. The award comprises a cash prize derived from interest on the corpus fund, a certificate of appreciation, and a memento.
The PMRDF was founded by Medhi’s granddaughter and current District Commissioner of Nalbari, Varnali Deka, using the personal prize money she received from various national awards. The corpus was built through contributions from her family, well-wishers, and socially conscious individuals.
The award is presented annually at the session of the Nalbari District Employees’ Association. This year, the district’s top scorer, Kaustabh Parashar, received the award at the 28th annual session held at Karia HS School, Nalbari.
In a gesture of encouragement and solidarity, Kamalesh Deka, retired Director of Coordination (Police and Wireless) and former IG of BSF—also the son-in-law of the late Panchanan Medhi—participated in the event.
District Commissioner Varnali Deka expressed her sincere gratitude to the government employees of Nalbari district and acknowledged their continued support in fostering good governance and strengthening social institutions.
