SONITPUR: The state of Assam is working tirelessly to eliminate lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis) through the second phase of the Mass Drug Administration (MDA) program. This campaign runs from February 10 to 19 and focuses on high-risk districts like Tinsukia, Biswanath, and Sonitpur. The goal is to ensure that over 90% of people take the anti-filaria medicines.
State Health Minister Ashok Singhal started the campaign in Dhekiajuli, Sonitpur, urging people to proactively fight the disease, which causes serious health, social, and financial problems. This program is part of a nationwide effort led by Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, covering 111 affected districts in 13 states. As part of the campaign, free diethylcarbamazine and albendazole tablets are given to eligible people, with ASHA, Anganwadi, and health workers distributing them door-to-door.
Emphasizing the importance of public cooperation, Nadda stated that over 17.5 crore people across the country in endemic zones would benefit from the free medication drive. He stressed that high compliance is key to eliminating LF and ensuring a healthier future for vulnerable communities.
Alongside the LF elimination campaign, Assam is also observing National Deworming Day 2025. The initiative aims to provide deworming tablets to children aged 1 to 19 years in government and private schools, as well as Anganwadi centres, to prevent infections leading to malnutrition, anaemia, and stunted growth.
Minister Singhal highlighted the importance of hygiene in preventing infections, urging citizens to practice proper handwashing, consume clean drinking water, and avoid open defecation. The state’s proactive measures aim to safeguard public health and enhance overall well-being, reinforcing its commitment to tackling major health concerns.
