GUWAHATI: Assam has come out on top in the Northeastern region as far as National Highway projects are concerned with the highest number of projects underway and the longest lengths of roads under construction worth a whopping Rs. 39,239 crore. The projects are either nearing completion in the 2024-25 timeframe or have been sanctioned but not yet started.

Recent data shows that Arunachal Pradesh is developing two projects spread over a total of 815 kilometers at an investment of Rs. 8,035 crore. In comparison, Nagaland, Manipur and Tripura have fewer number of projects and shorter road distances, clearly showing Assam's advancement in this area. While Arunachal Pradesh has a substantial future investment plan, it currently has slightly fewer ongoing projects compared to Assam.

Assam has contributed the most towards financial outlays for development and upkeep of National Highways, with a total of Rs 5,329 crore. Arunachal Pradesh follows this closely with an outlay of Rs 3,488 crore, whereas Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura have allocated Rs 1,227 crore, Rs 1,508 crore, and Rs 514 crore, respectively.

The timely completion of these National Highway projects is based on several factors such as the availability of encumbrance-free land, acquisition of necessary clearances, and financial condition of contractors.

All the current projects in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura are expected to be completed by 2028. In an effort to overcome likely setbacks and reduce delays, measures like efficient land acquisition procedures and enhanced coordination with stakeholders have been undertaken.
