MARGHERITA: A leopard that had terrorized residents of Bargolai in the Lekhapani forest range of Margherita Co-District for over a year was finally captured in a cage on the night of December 8.

The capture of the animal has brought much relief to the residents, who had been living in constant threat. Among many such distressing incidents, two months ago, a young girl from Telkhad Basti was severely injured after an attack by the leopard. According to the father of the victim, Binod Borah, the leopard attacked his daughter as she rode her scooter home from school.

In response to the mounting threat, the forest service took preventive measures by strategically positioning a cage to capture the elusive animal. In weeks of vigilant monitoring, the department's efforts yielded fruit when the leopard entered the trap on Sunday night.

People went to the spot to see the captured animal that had been causing a great scare and disturbance in their lives.

Since then, the forest officials have taken charge of the situation and are taking good care of the leopard's safety and shifting it to a safer location. Authorities reassured the local people that they were still committed to solving human-wildlife conflicts and ensuring the safety of the community.

The capture marked the end of a tense chapter in the Bargolai community, thus making it possible for them to lead their normal lives.
