GUWAHATI: In a tragic incident, a wild elephant was found dead in Bandpara Forest Range, Rajpara Muhipara. This incident has highlighted concerns among the local residents of the area and wildlife conservationists.
Although the exact cause of death is still under investigation, the initial reports indicate that it may have been killed due to electrocution. The elephant's body was discovered near a herd, raising worries about the safety of other elephants in the region.
Local residents expressed their disappointment, blaming fences and lack of security measures in the area for the tragedy. They called on the Forest Department to conduct a detailed investigation and implement stricter security measures. This initiative is taken in order to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The forest officials have assured a detailed post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death with an aim to provide clarity on the incident and be a helping guide for future conservation efforts.
Meanwhile, earlier last month, an adult male elephant was found dead in a paddy field at Borkukura revenue village under the Margherita West Range Forest of Digboi Forest Division.
Local residents believed the elephant had died due to electrocution, which they suspected was deliberately caused by certain interests to stop elephants from damaging crops.
According to villagers, the elephants had frequently visited the area searching for food, especially paddy fields. However, they conveyed annoyance and accused the forest guards stationed at a nearby camp of carelessness, claiming that the guards often consumed hooch and failed to respond.
