MANGALDAI: The lone Chinese origin person in Darrang district Pradyut Kumar Amounge, popularly known as Mantu, a resident of Ward No. 1 of Mangaldai town, passed away at his residence on Tuesday night at around 9pm due to old age ailments. A retired army personnel, former Ward Commissioner of Mangaldai Municipality Board, a footballer of high repute, referee, and a social worker, Amounge was 90.

Born on July 19, 1935, in the Christian Basti of Sivasagar town, Mantu Amounge moved to Mangaldai at a young age with his parents and settled here permanently. His father, Eric Campbell Amounge, was a petition writer at Mangaldai court, and his mother, Prabha Devi, was a nurse at the Mangaldai Civil Hospital. Amounge joined the Bombay Engineering Corps of the Indian Army on July 19, 1954, and took retirement on October 23, 1972. Deeply connected to Mangaldai’s social life, Mantu Amounge was a goalkeeper for the Mangaldai United Club and was associated with the Mangaldai Sports Association for many years. He was also a popular football referee. For years, he recited Bible passages at interfaith prayer meetings organized by the Darrang district administration, AASU, and other organizations.

Known for his reserved nature, friendly demeanor, and ability to connect with everyone, Amounge’s death has cast a shadow of grief over Mangaldai.

His last rites were performed on Wednesday at Bolonpara Garogaon, near Bhakatpara in Udalguri district, as per the Christian rituals. At the time of his death, he left behind a host of relatives.
