Assam: Man Allegedly Lynched To Death Over Suspicion of Being Child Kidnapper

Guwahati: In an unfortunate incident, a man was allegedly lynched to death, by a mob in the Dhemaji district of Assam on Wednesday night over the suspicion of him being a child kidnapper.

As per police, locals suspected him a child lifter following which he was thrashed brutally. However, the identity of the person is yet to be ascertained.

''We received information of the same around 7:30 pm that a mob was assaulting a person. When the police team arrived at the spot, the person had already sustained severe injuries and was unconscious,'' HT quoted Dhemaji's Deputy Superintendent of Police (headquarters) AT Doley as saying.

Doley further said that the person was later to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

As per reports, the deceased had taken a child from a mother's lap following which the woman raised an alarm. On hearing the cries of the woman, a large crowd gathered and attacked the man.

Meanwhile, the initial investigation revealed that the person was mentally unstable for the past 15 years.

In this regard, police have registered a case of murder and have also apprehended seven persons for questioning.

Further investigation is underway.

In December last year, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika on behalf of the Chief Minister, during the first day of the winter session said the state government is mulling an Act to prevent mob lynching incidents.

The response came after a ruling party MLA Mrinal Saikia raised the issue of mob lynchings in the State under Rule 54. The MLA drew the attention of the House to the mob lynching incidents in Assam, especially the recent incident in Jorhat in which Animesh Bhuyan got lynched and also the lynching case of Abhijeet Nath and Nilotpal Das in Karbi Anglong two years ago.

The MLA further stated that to ensure that such horrifying incidents do not recur and strict action is initiated against the guilty person(s), the government must bring in a separate Act.

''Mob lynchings are not a part of the culture of Assam,'' Saikia added.
