GUWAHATI: In a series of events, a doctor at a state dispensary reported molestation and repeated harassment by an individual named Nurul Haque, hailing from Guwahati's Ambari area, who visited her under the pretext of being a patient. Reports claim that the alleged individual had been stalking and sending obscene messages to the doctor for days.
Acting on her complaint, the Central Guwahati Police District (CGPD) team from Satgaon Police Station acted swiftly. Investigators gathered strong evidence and seized the accused’s phone—uncovering incriminating material—and arrested him. Legal action has been initiated against the perpetrator.
Meanwhile, a non-teaching staff member of the law department at Assam University, Silchar, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly molesting a 14-year-old girl. He was absconding after allegedly committing the crime on Friday afternoon, police said.
In response to protests by the victim's family, the university authorities suspended the prime accused, Faruque Ahmed (57), following a complaint lodged by the head of the law department. Ahmed, a lower division clerk, was charged with molesting the girl, the daughter of a housekeeping staff member.
A large protest outside the university campus on Saturday demanded his immediate arrest and justice for the victim. Registrar of the university, Pradosh Kiran Nath, who ordered the suspension, reported the matter to the vice-chancellor, Rajive Mohan Pant, and the superintendent of police (Cachar), Numal Mahatta.
