SIVASAGAR: A 51-year-old man named Haren Murari was tragically killed by a herd of wild elephants in the Na-Beel area of Demow, located near the Panidihing Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam's Sivasagar district. This incident comes amid a growing human-elephant conflict in the state.
Locals reported that a four-member elephant herd, which had strayed from their natural habitat in the Panidihing Wildlife Sanctuary, attacked Murari on Sunday night.
The elephants, foraging in a paddy field, trampled him before tossing him aside, causing fatal injuries. Forest officials later arrived at the scene and took the victim's body to Demow Civil Hospital for an autopsy.
The Panidihing Wildlife Sanctuary, known as both an elephant habitat and corridor, has witnessed a rise in incidents of elephants entering agricultural areas in search of food.
Mohan Saikia, a local farmer, said, "These incidents have become increasingly common during the harvest season. The elephants are drawn to our paddy fields, and it's becoming dangerous for villagers to move around freely, even in the early evening hours."
The forest department has advised villagers to stay alert and refrain from going out, particularly during dawn and dusk when elephants are most active.
A forest official said, "It was an unfortunate incident. We are working on measures to mitigate human-elephant conflict in the area through various strategies, including the creation of elephant corridors and spreading awareness among the local communities."
